As of Jan. 1, pork producers can get diagnostic profiling services from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica (BIVI). The service is to "protect pigs from porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome," say company officials.

"The BIVI diagnostic profiling service can accurately assess the exposure pattern of the PRRS virus and determine if vaccine use can help reduce the economic impact of a PRRS infection in a herd," according to a company news release. "Commercial field trials have shown that vaccinating healthy growing pigs can aid in the reduction of PRRS-induced disease during the grow/finish stage, resulting in increased feed efficiency and average daily gain and reduced mortality."

By profiling phases of production and exposure to the PRRS virus can determine if there is a need to vaccinate pigs that may need PRRS protection later in life.

Producers who would like to take check out the diagnostic profiling services should call BIVI at (800) 325-9167. The diagnostic services offer is available for a limited time.
