Export vital to U.S. pork

Globe The export market is a vital sector of the U.S. pork industry and it is only reaffirmed when you look at the latest statistics.

Randy Spronk, president of the National Pork Producers Council, touched on a number of topics during the opening press conference at World Pork Expo, but one of the most important areas he talked about was the U.S. export market.

Here are some of the facts and figures that Spronk shared:

  • 25 percent of U.S. pork is exported
  • $6 billion worth of pork was exported last year
  • Pork exports create 110,000 jobs in the U.S.
  • Japan, Canada, Mexico and China are the largest export markets
  • On a value basis Japan is the best market at $2 billion worth of pork being exported last year
  • Exports have added $56 to the price of a hog on a live weight basis

"Trade is very important to our industry," said Spronk at the end of the export portion of the press conference.
