U.S. beef and pork exports maintained their strong momentum in May, with double-digit increases in export value for both products compared to last year. Beef exports in May were up 5 percent in volume to 102,967 metric tons (mt) and 15 percent in value ($589 million). For the first five months of the year, export volume was up 9 percent to 479,344 mt and value increased 17 percent to $2.64 billion. May pork exports totaled 188,030 mt, up 4 percent from a year ago, while export value remained in the $600 million range for the third consecutive month ($599.6 million, +19 percent). For January through May, pork export volume (964,631 mt) was 9 percent ahead of last year’s pace, while export value was up 15 percent to $2.84 billion.
Dan Halstrom, U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) senior vice president for marketing and communications, further discusses these results in the attached audio report. He explains that while beef exports to Japan slowed in May, shipments to other Asian markets such as Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan trended higher. South Korea also stood out on the pork side, with export value up nearly 75 percent from a year ago. Halstrom also notes that Mexico continues to perform extremely well for both U.S. beef and pork in 2014.
