Applications are being requested by January 31, 2008 for a University of Illinois master's degree program in the swine industry. High-caliber students with a B.S. degree in Animal Sciences or related discipline are sought for the degree Master of Science- Swine Production Management. The degree is sponsored by The Maschhoffs, Inc.
"This program is aimed at students planning a career in production management within the swine industry," explained Michael Ellis, a professor in the University of Illinois Department of Animal Sciences. "In the future, these individuals will need an increasingly broader range of technical and business management skills and practical experience if they are to be successful.
Chad Pilcher, who grew up on a small, purebred hog farm near Paxton, is the first graduate student in the new program. "It's a great opportunity," says Pilcher. "It is a unique experience--a program that combines the academic strengths of the University of Illinois with first-hand involvement in The Maschhoffs, Inc. system."To me, the degree is a great way to gain practical experience in the field rather than just spending all of the time sitting in a classroom."
The Maschhoffs Inc. is headquartered in Carlyle and over the past decade has partnered with the University of Illinois on numerous progressive research projects in swine production science, ranging from nutrition and health to transportation and engineering.
