PETA is 0 for 2 with Applebee’s shareholders. Last week, for the second year in a row, shareholders voted down a proposal from the animal rights group that would have required Applebee’s suppliers to adopt controlled atmosphere killing (CAK) for chickens. Less than 5 percent of shareholders voted in favor of the proposal.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals contend that CAK of chickens is more humane than current protocols used in U.S. slaughter facilities. During the CAK process, chickens are euthanized when oxygen is replaced with inert gases.

Although CAK is used in Europe, Applebee’s says the technology is still unproven, but will continue to monitor the situation.
