Sen. Tom Harkin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry announced an upcoming hearing on the proposed ban on packer ownership of livestock and the USDA’s enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act. The hearing will be held on Tuesday, July 16.

The hearing will focus on banning packers from owning livestock, as well as USDA’s enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act. A report from the General Accounting Office of Congress in September of 2000 included a number of recommendations to improve the USDA’s enforcement of the act.

The committee will consider whether these recommendations were implemented and consider other strategies to protect farmers from any possible unfair meatpacker practices.
