Smokey D’s BBQ is continuing its success on the BBQ circuit with a huge win: Grand Champion of the Kingsford Invitational. The event featured eight of the most elite BBQ teams in the country. The winner-take-all contest garnered Warth and his team the $50,000 prize, a commemorative ring and ultimate bragging rights.
The second annual competition was held recently at the Intrepid Sea and Space Museum on a pier in New York City. Teams qualified by claiming top prizes in competitions throughout the year, which also included the opportunity to compete at the Kingsford Invitational. The showdown took place over two days and was filmed for a cable special. The show will air in the spring on Destination America - look for more information on PorkNetwork as the date draws nearer.
The teams that earned the honor to compete included:
Across the Track Cook-off Team: Grand champions of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest
Sweet Swine O’ Mine: Grand Champions of the Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest
Pork N’ Mindy: 2013 Grand Champions of the Great Lenexa Barbecue Battle
Pellet Envy: Winners of Destination America’s BBQ PITMASTERS Season 4
3 Eyz BBQ: Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) Team of the Year
Smokey D’s BBQ: Grand Champions of the American Royal World Series of Barbecue Open Contest in Kansas City
Cool Smoke: Grand Champions of the Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue in Lynchburg, TN
Queology: Competing on behalf of Folds of Honor, the military nonprofit partner of Kingsford
The competition added a charitable component this year which matched the $50,000 in prize money with a donation to Folds of Honor which provides scholarships to family members of veterans. This is fitting for the competition which takes place over Veteran’s Day weekend.
