The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) has completed phase 1 of the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) Swine 2012 study. Names of participating producers have been provided to USDA’s Veterinary Services and producers can expect to be contacted beginning Sept. 10, according to the American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV).
Producers will be invited to participate in phase 2, which entails completing a 45-minute interview on swine health and management. They also have the opportunity to sign up for free testing, including testing a grain sample for particle size analysis, testing blood from sows or finishers for PRRS, and/or testing fecal samples for Salmonella. Results from the testing of feed, blood, and/or feces will be returned to producers.
“Swine 2012 will provide the pork industry with valuable information on levels of swine disease regarding farrow-to-finish production; all-in, all-out management and biosecurity practices” says Jim Niewold, Illinois pork producer and National Pork Board (NPB) Swine Health Committee Chair. “I wholeheartedly encourage any producer who can participate in the NAHMS Swine 2012 study to do so.”
The AASV, NPB and National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) support participation in the Swine 2012 Study. Information from the fifth NAHMS swine study will aid the swine industry by facilitating trade and informing policy debates with science-based information.
