Rhode Island has become the ninth state to ban the use of sow gestation crates. The law passed with broad support and was signed by Gov. Lincoln Chafee earlier this week.
Also passed by the state were laws eliminating crates for veal calf production as well as routine tail docking of cows. The bills were introduced by R.I. Senate Majority Leader Dominick Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4) and Rep. Patricia Serpa (D – Dist. 27).
Rhode Island joins Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Maine, Michigan, Ohio and Oregon which have also passed similar laws to phase out gestation crates.
