Pork producer margins steady, packer margins improve

Pork producer margins held nearly steady last week, with margins at a negative $37 per hog marketed, according to the Sterling Pork Profit Tracker. Negotiated cash hog prices declined $1.61 per hundredweight last week to $75.76. Pork packer margins improved $0.84 per head for the week, leaving profits at $4.21per head, according to estimates developed by Sterling Marketing. Inc. Vale, Ore.

Cattle feeding margins declined $17 per head for the week as cash sales dropped another $1 per hundredweight, according to the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker. Beef packers saw their margins improve $20 per head, leaving losses at $14.52 per head. The Sterling Beef Profit Quotient declined 47 points for the week and the industry profitability index is now negative 220.3.

A year ago cattle feeders sold cash cattle at $126.11 per hundredweight, resulting in profits of $39.88 per head. Last year cash hogs fetched $87.66 per hundredweight, resulting in profits of $13.54 per head.

The Sterling Beef and Pork Profit Trackers are calculated using actual weekly prices for both cattle and hogs, feed costs, beef and pork cutout prices, drop credits and other factors that influence profit margins.

The Sterling Pork Profit Tracker for the week ending Mar. 15:

  • Average farrow-to-finish margins: -$37.11 per head.
  • Average pork packer margins:  $4.21 per head.

The Sterling Beef Profit Tracker for the week ending Mar. 16:

  • Average feedyard margins: -$71.83 per head.
  • Average packer margins: -$14.52 per head.
  • Sterling Profit Quotient: -220.3.
