Pork producer losses grew again last week, according to calculations by Sterling Marketing, Vale, Ore. Farrow-to-finish producers lost an average $38.53 per head for the week ending Dec. 14, adding about $10.00 to losses recorded the week before. One year ago, producers were losing $3.83 per head, according to Sterling estimates.
Meanwhile, packer margins improved for the week regaining positive territory and registering $4.27 per head, after recording a loss of $2.14 per head the previous week. One year ago, packer margins were $12.28 per head on the plus side.
Hog slaughter last week totaled 2.304 million head, down 2.5 percent from the week before and down 1.9 percent compared to the same week last year. Western Corn Belt negotiated hog prices fell about $5 for the week to $81.07 per hundredweight versus $86.06 the week before.
Feed costs for the week ending Dec. 14 were estimated at $128.82 for hogs placed into finishing as of that date.

Meanwhile, cattle feedlot losses eased somewhat last week. Losses averaged $80.68 per head for the week ending Dec. 14. That compares to losses of $113.19 per head the week before and a $123 per head loss for the same week in 2011.
Beef packer losses also eased for the week ending Dec. 14. Packers lost an average of $43.50 per head for the week compared to losses of $74.33 recorded the prior week.
