Swine veterinarians and producers can use fewer bottles of Ingelvac PRRS MLV to vaccinate their pigs and breeding herds against porcine reproductive and respiratory (PRRS) virus with the availability of 100-dose units from Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. (BIVI).  The 100-dose modified-live virus vaccine, to be rehydrated with 200 mL of provided liquid diluent, makes it convenient for producers and veterinarians to treat more animals per bottle.

Ingelvac PRRS MLV is recommended for use in healthy, susceptible pigs, sows and gilts as an aid in the reduction of disease associated with PRRS virus, both the reproductive and respiratory forms, according to Reid Philips, DVM, technical manager, PRRS, for BIVI.

“To control the respiratory form of the disease, Ingelvac PRRS MLV can be administered to growing/finishing pigs at three weeks of age or older,” Philips explains. “To protect the breeding herd from both reproductive and respiratory forms, the vaccine can be administered to pregnant or non-pregnant sows or gilts every three to four months as part of a farm’s PRRS management program.”

Philips notes that the use of vaccine is just one component of a comprehensive control program swine producers can implement in their systems to most effectively manage PRRS infections. “Ingelvac PRRS vaccines have been effectively used for 18 years to reduce the impact of the disease in PRRS-positive flows. The new 100-dose units add to the convenience of using the vaccine, especially in larger systems.”

Ingelvac PRRS MLV in the 100-dose units will be available starting Aug. 1. The vaccine also is available in 10- and 50-dose bottles. For more information about Ingelvac PRRS MLV and other BIVI swine vaccines, contact your veterinarian, or call BIVI at (800) 325-9167.
