October pork exports disappoint

Export ship U.S. pork exports in October were 435 million pounds, down almost 12 percent from a year ago.

Lower October exports were mainly due to weakness in several important Asian markets, with reduced shipments to Japan (-5), South Korea (-65), and Taiwan (-9).

While exports to China/Hong Kong were more than 20 percent above those of a year ago, shipments were almost 54 percent below those of October 2011. The 10 largest foreign destinations for U.S. pork exports in October are summarized below:
