"I had absolutely no idea that would happen.”
That’s what 17-year-old Alexis Delaney said after her prized hog sold for $50,000.
According to The Des Moines Register, Delaney’s Reserve Grand Champion FFA Market Hog went to Iowa Select Farms for the record-setting sum – nearly double the previous mark.
Her hog, named Frankie, was auctioned at the annual Sale of Champions.
The Sale of Champions is held at the Iowa State Fair by the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA).
Frankie with just one five champions to set records at the sale, though Frankie easily stole the spotlight. An auctioneer jokingly asked whether Frankie does any tricks, at which point Delany placed a marshmallow in her mouth and kissed the pig.
This year, the auction garnered $327,000 in sales for students showing livestock. The money goes to providing scholarships for youth interested in pursuing agriculture. IFAA has provided scholarships for the last two decades.
