The recent severe heat wave pulled down average hog weights in Iowa/southern Minnesota last week by 2.9 pounds from previous week and 4.7/lbs from year-ago. USDA reports last week's average at 263.7/lbs, lowest since early July 2009. Latest figure is down 12.1/lbs from this year's peak in early January. Hogs consume less feed when its hot so they don't grow as fast. Lighter weights also mean less pork produced per hog and in total, supportive for prices near term. USDA's pork carcass value Tuesday set a new all-time high at $101.31/hundredweight.
