This market update is a PorkNetwork weekly column reporting trends in weaner pig prices and swine facility availability.  All information contained in this update is for the week ended June 27, 2014.

Pricing off the February lean hog contract for December sales shows a weaner breakeven of $57.89, down $6.33 for the week. The February lean hog contract was down $3.25 for the week while the nearby contracts were basically unchanged. Feed costs were down $0.32 per head. The spread between the August and February futures contract widened by $3.73 to $41.33. With the weekly cash price at $75.87 the estimated profit potential is negative $18.00 per head, one of the largest spreads of the past 18 months. Breakeven prices are based on closing futures prices on June 27, 2014 and the assumptions outlined below. The breakeven price is the estimated maximum you could pay for a weaner pig and breakeven when selling the finished hog.

In addition, these calculations don’t take into account market supply and demand dynamics for weaner pigs and space availability.

National Direct Delivered Feeder Pig Report

Cash traded weaner pig volume was below average with 23,739 head reported which is 80 percent of the 52 week average. Cash prices were $75.87 per head, down $0.88 from the previous week.

Graph 1 shows the seasonal trends of the cash weaner pig market.


The number of reported weaner pigs sold on a formula basis was 32,564 head at an average price of $45.89. That’s down $0.97 per head from the previous week.
