Dr Pearse Lyons, president and founder of Alltech, received the RDS Gold Medal for Industry and Commerce at a ceremony in the Royal Dublin Society Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland. Dr. Lyons will join honourees such as Sir Anthony O’Reilly, Dr. Peter Sutherland, Dr. Denis Brosnan, Sir Michael Smurfit, Dr. Craig Barrett, Dr Martin Naughton and Mr. Willie Walsh.
The medal is given in recognition of Dr. Lyons' achievements both in Ireland and abroad, with the criteria for winning including professional excellence, international reputation, exceptional leadership skills, successful business innovation, outstanding business achievement, substantial impact on economic development, and achievements widely recognised by peers. The award comes on the heels of Alltech’s penultimate Gathering event, Global 500, which brought 760 attendees from 50 different countries, to Irish shores to experience Irish agriculture and society. More than 4,000 people have attended Alltech’s Gathering events this year, such as the International Craft Brewing and Distilling Convention, Alltech Entrepreneur Seminar, Ambassador's Dinner and the Alltech Innovation Competition. The final event of the year will be the Presidents' Club, a meeting of 130 president and CEOs.
A native of Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland, Dr. Lyons has helped revolutionize the animal feed industry with Alltech’s natural solutions, which are safe and beneficial for the animal, consumer and environment. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University College Dublin, Ireland, and a master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Birmingham, England. He worked as a biochemist at Irish distilleries before establishing Alltech in 1980. In the past 33 years, Dr. Lyons has developed Alltech from a small Kentucky-based enterprise to a global megabrand now employing 3,000 people and conducting business in 128 countries, with annual sales approaching $1 billion.
“It’s been an amazing year for Alltech in Ireland. The Gathering provided the perfect platform for us to bring the full range of Alltech events to Ireland as well as being the ideal time to launch our range of beers and spirits. I have spent my life building Alltech up to where it is today and it gives me great pleasure to be able to bring that success home,” said Dr. Pearse Lyons. “I would like to thank the RDS for this medal and for their work over the past 20 years in fostering appreciation for Irish business and commerce.”
