A barn fire at a Hutterite colony near Salem, S.D., killed 600 hogs.

According to The Daily Republic, the fire ripped through a hog barn on the Golden View Hutterite Colony over the weekend. Authorities believe embers from a nearby burn pit were likely sucked into a vent, igniting the fire in the ceiling of the hog barn.

The colony is still reeling from the loss but has said it plans to repair the barn.

“The building sustained damage, but the building damage certainly wouldn’t equal the loss of the hogs,” McCook County (S.D.) Emergency Manager Brad Stiefvater told reporters.
