Hundreds of hogs killed in Christensen Farms fire

fighting fire A fire broke out at a Christensen Farms facility near Pierre, S.D., over the weekend.

According to Dakota Radio Group News, a passerby reported the fire to authorities around 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, but by the time crews arrived, half of the hog barn was already engulfed in flames.

Sean Kruger with the Pierre Rural Fire Department reports up to 500 hogs were killed in the blaze.

He also points to a firewall in the structure that helped to protects hogs in the other half of the barn. Read more here.

Laura Snow, a member of the Pierre Volunteer Fire Department, added on the department’s Facebook page that it is “a tough loss for those folks.”
