Bacon Starts here Where does your bacon start? It could start during your morning farm chores, in grandma’s recipe or in your grocery cart. During National Pork Month, the Kansas Pork Association’s (KPA) retail promotion, Your Bacon Starts Here, helped build the buzz about bacon, food and farming.

Hy-Vee supermarkets in the Kansas City area featured a life-sized cutout of a Kansas pork producer and signage at the meat case encouraging shoppers to visit yourbaconstartshere.org and enter to win free bacon for a year. The website greeted viewers with pork recipes and three videos featuring Kansas farm families.

“This program has provided a great opportunity for pork producers to show consumers how much care and pride we take in producing safe, quality food,” said Michael Springer of Neodesha, Kan., whose farm and family are in featured in a video. “We need to take every chance we can to tell consumers about what goes on at our farm.  These videos help us accomplish that.”

In addition to the Springer family’s video, yourbaconstartshere.org features the Meet the Bellar Family video and the Meet the Wondra Family video.

Bacon Starts here To win free bacon for a year, visitors to the site could upload a photo to Facebook portraying where their bacon comes from. “We were excited to launch our first retail program in years that gives Kansas pork farmers a presence in the grocery store,” said Jodi Oleen, KPA’s director of consumer relations.

Videos Continue to Attract Viewers
Your Bacon Starts Here was made possible by KPA’s partnerships with Hy-Vee, Farmland Foods and a grant from the Iowa Pork Producers Association. KPA staff personally delivered promotional materials to Hy-Vee stores, including reusable grocery bags, to help kick off the Pork Checkoff-supported program, which ran from mid-October to mid-November.

While the promotion is complete, Your Bacon Starts Here still allows producers to connect with consumers.

Bacon Starts here Since the campaign’s videos are online, they continue to add value as they attract viewers and are shared via social media and other KPA programs.

“Thanks to the longevity of these videos, we’ll be able to tell Kansas pork producers’ stories long after the conclusion of the promotion,” Oleen said.
