Seaboard Food Inc. has a hog feeding operation called Ladder Creek hog in northeast Greeley County, Kansas. The first barns were stocked on July 17, 2012, and on August 22, 2013, the Kansas Chapter of the Sierra Club filed a complaint. The complaint notes that water levels in three of the first five lagoons to be placed into operation on the premises were below the 10-ft. standard for odor control.
The operation’s current capacity is 132,000 pigs.
According to standards set by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) for impoundments, or lagoons, they are supposed to be filled to a level of 10 feet to allow mixing of clean water with the hog manure to facilitate treatment.
Relying on calculations and information provided by Seaboard, KDHE granted Seaboard an exception to the permit condition, cutting the requirement to 5.5 feet of depth.
While the permit language doesn’t include exceptions, KDHE personnel said qualifying language was inadvertently left out of the original permit.
No odor complaints have been made by residents in the area.
