Smithfield ends contract with Paula Deen

Paula DeenSmithfield Paula Deen’s current bask in media attention ends in her termination as a celebrity chef on the Food Network and as the spokesperson for Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork producer.

Smithfield issued the following statement to justify its position to end Deen’s contract:

"Smithfield condemns the use of offensive and discriminatory language and behavior of any kind. Therefore, we are terminating our partnership with Paula Deen. Smithfield is determined to be an ethical food industry leader and it is important that our values and those of our spokespeople are properly aligned."

Paula Deen has been the spokesperson for Smithfield Foods since 2006 and has sold Paula Deen-branded hams under the Smithfield name. Read more here.

Smithfield Foods, centered in Smithfield, Virginia, has been in the news recently with its planned Chinese buyout. China is the world’s largest consumer and producer of pork and the third-largest consumer of U.S. pork.

I'm betting that the good 'ol boys who started Smithfield Hams used more racial slurs than Paula Deen ever thought about using. That was 30 years ago, for Pete's sake! You shouldn't judge someone on a comment made 30 years ago. She answered the question put to her honestly in a deposition. She didn't lie.
