With the pork industry experiencing financial losses for close to two years, it is no surprise that attendance to this year’s World Pork Expo was down approximately 17 percent. The official attendance figure for the event, which occurred June 3-5 in Des Moines, Iowa, was 14,625, down from 17,556 last year according to officials of the National Pork Producers Council.
"With the market conditions, we knew some pork producers would not be able to make the trip this year," said John Wrigley, World Pork Expo general manager. Wrigley went on to explain that the Type A H1N1 influenza issue probably had a significant impact in reducing attendance by international visitors.
The 2010 Expo has been scheduled for June 9-11.
