Pork, beef producer profit margins hold steady

Pork producer margins held nearly steady last week, with margins at a negative $37.35 per hog marketed, according to the Sterling Pork Profit Tracker. Negotiated cash hog prices increased $0.03 per hundredweight last week to $77.37. Pork packer margins declined $3.83 per head for the week, leaving profits at $3.37 per head, according to estimates developed by Sterling Marketing, Inc., Vale, Ore.

Cattle feeding margins were also nearly steady, with per head losses at $54.52, according to the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker. Beef packers saw their margins improve $35 per head, leaving losses at $34.56 per head. The Sterling Beef Profit Quotient improved 2 points for the week and the industry profitability index is now negative 173.1, according to estimates developed by Sterling Marketing.

A year ago cattle feeders sold cash cattle at $126.77 per hundredweight, resulting in profits of $75.27 per head. Last year cash hogs fetched $87.44 per hundredweight, resulting in profits of $14.03 per head.

The Sterling Beef and Pork Profit Trackers are calculated using actual weekly prices for both cattle and hogs, feed costs, beef and pork cutout prices, drop credits and other factors that influence profit margins.

The Sterling Pork Profit Tracker for the week ending Mar. 8:

  • Average farrow-to-finish margins: -$37.35 per head.
  • Average pork packer margins:  $3.37 per head.

The Sterling Beef Profit Tracker for the week ending Mar. 9:

  • Average feedyard margins: -$54.52 per head.
  • Average packer margins: -$34.56 per head.
  • Sterling Profit Quotient: -173.3.
