The Iowa Pork Producers Association will host its 12th annual Winter Pork Picnic from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 27 at Capital Square in downtown Des Moines and the public is invited. In addition to the free lunch, IPPA is making $1 and $2 discount pork coupons available to everyone who attends the luncheon.
Producers from several county pork organizations will brave the winter weather to grill and serve 2,800 ground pork and bacon burgers to celebrate the Iowa pork industry and thank consumers for purchasing pork and supporting the industry. Chips, pop, ice cream and samples of other pork products also will be available.
IPPA will again team up with the Food Bank of Iowa in asking for donations at the Winter Pork Picnic to help feed Iowa's hungry. IPPA will match all donations up to $5,000. All proceeds will be donated directly to the Food Bank of Iowa.
An added feature of this year's picnic is the official announcement of the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award for January.
The award, sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and WHO Radio, with financial support from the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers, is presented 10 times annually in memory of long-time farm broadcaster Gary Wergin. Recipients include livestock farmers who take pride in caring for their neighborhoods, animals and environment and have demonstrated what it means to be a good neighbor.
Award recipients are recognized with a plaque and the presentation is broadcast live on WHO Radio by farm broadcaster Bob Quinn.
Other participating sponsors of the Winter Pork Picnic include Fareway Stores, Webster City Custom Meats, Rotella's, Frito Lay, Pepsi Americas and Wells Blue Bunny.
