If you’re interested in learning about the different types of hog marketing contracts, your wait is nearing an end. Work is on schedule to have the Congress-mandated information in place by Oct. 1, says Jim Baker, head of USDA’s Packers and Stockyards Administration.
USDA will maintain a record of all packer contracts, while still protecting their confidentiality. The contract information, minus the packers’ and producers’ names, will be accessible via the Internet or in reading rooms. Personnel in the Des Moines, Iowa, Packers and Stockyards office will gather the contract information.
However there is an issue that could cause some long-term problems – Congress didn’t provide funding to maintain the library.
The top 15 packerswill be requiredto provide all marketing contract information to USDA, including pricing terms and number of hogs bought on contract.
