Tesco, the United Kingdom's megastore, is heading into the U.S. market and TNS Retail Forward, a global market insight group, is expecting it to make a big splash.

According to a TNS report, Tesco's Fresh & Easy stores is expect to reach 500 stores by 2011, and could boost $10 billion in sales 2015. The Fresh & Easy format features smaller stores, ready-to-cook meals and a focus on consumer convenience.

"The idea of having 'ready-to-go' meals that are high quality, healthy and cost-effective means that this type of meal option has the power to directly compete with restaurants," says Mary Brett Whitfield, TNS senior vice president. "Fresh & Easy's arrival is part of an unfolding shake-up in the food retailing landscape. We will need to wait and see what other retailers will do to respond to these changes in the market."
