Several new reports from USDA’s Economic Research Service identify trends that will affect meat demand and marketing opportunities for pork producers.

  • U.S. food expenditures are projected to increase by 26 percent by 2020, driven by population growth and personal income growth.
  • The number of Americans older than 65 years will jump from 35 million in 2000 to 54 million in 2020.
  • While the rate of new food-product introductions declined between 1995 and 2000, "all-natural" product introductions increased by 178 percent and new organic products grew by 57 percent.
  • Rising incomes in low- to middle-income countries should increase food expenditures and demand for meat overseas. Foreign markets are likely to be an important source of future growth for the U.S. food sector.
