The Type A H1N1 flu scare comes at a bad time for pork producers. April was the 17th consecutive month of red ink for farrow-to-finish operations out of the last 19 months, according to Iowa State University calculations.

Many pork producers are nearing the end of their equity.  Late spring and summer is usually a profitable time for producers. If summer hog prices do not rebound, the normal fall decline in profitability may prove tragic for many hog farms.
