About 60 percent of all U.S. pork producers have less than 100 head of hogs; however, they account for only 1 percent of the total inventory. On the other end of the spectrum, USDA reports that 2,466 operations have more than 5,000 head of hogs. Those producers account for more than half of all the hogs in the United States.

Hog operations in Colorado, Texas and Oklahoma are especially concentrated, with more than 90 percent of all hogs in those states located on operations with more than 5,000 head.
