The location of hog operations doesn’t always coincide with the location of the hogs. For example, Texas has about 6 percent of the operations but only 1 percent of the hogs. North Carolina accounts for 15 percent of all hogs but has only 3.5 percent of the operations.
The five states with the most hogs, Iowa, North Carolina, Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana, account for two-thirds of all hogs but only one-third of operations. A few states saw operations grow slightly from 2005 to 2006, including Kentucky, Ohio, Oklahoma and a few Northeastern states.
