The number of U.S. operations with hogs onsite in 2006 totaled 65,540, according to USDA calculations. For the year, those numbers dropped by 1,740 compared to the level in 2005. However, the pace of the decline is slowing compared to the long-term trend.
Still, hog numbers in the past few years continue to climb, as fewer producers raise more hogs with fewer sows.
It is worth noting that USDA includes all producers, even those with one or two hogs on site.
