USDA predicts a drop in hog prices from 2006 to 2007, but prices increase from 2007 through 2012. Prices weaken after 2012, as pork supplies start to increase. Based on USDA’s estimates, live-hog net returns over cash costs are negative in 2007, 2008 and 2009. The breakeven price for hogs rises from $47.68 per hundredweight in 2007 to $53.58 at the end of the 10-year forecast. That compares to a $41.25 breakeven in both 2005 and 2006.
