There is finally some relief from the red ink that has been a continuous flood since last October. The average base barrow/gilt carcass price was nearly $30 per hundredweight higher in mid-May than at the start of April. Prices reached $80 per hundredweight in mid-May for the first time since December 2004. The price run-up couldn’t be more welcome. From October through April, farrow-to-finish operations lost an average of $27 per hog sold, the worst string of losses since winter 1998/1999.
