In 2007, the United States imported a record 10 million hogs from Canada or 9 percent of our slaughter. That dropped to 9.3 million head in 2008 and 6.2 million head in 2009.
The sow herd reduction has been longer and deeper in Canada than here at home. The Canadians have been reducing their breeding herd for nearly five years. Today, the Canadian sow herd is 15 percent below the inventory peak in January 2005.
The number of live hogs coming south from Canada in 2010 is expected to be well below 2009’s level and less than half of the 2007 peak.
