Pork production hit a record 21 billion pounds in 2006, up 320 million pounds from 2005 levels. Producers say they intend to farrow more sows during the first half of 2007 than they did in that same period last year. Pork production is on pace to rise again this year, which would mean yet another new record. At some point in the year, deteriorating profitability will likely slow expansion.
