The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Pfizer Animal Health’s Excenel RTU EZ (ceftiofur hydrochloride) for the treatment and control of swine respiratory disease. The product now makes injections easier, say company officials.
Studies show that Excenel RTU EZ is significantly more syringeable when compared to Excenel RTU. Another improvement producers will appreciate is its new yellow skirt color for easier bottle identification, says Steve Sornsen, DVM, director of swine veterinary services for Pfizer Animal Health. In addition, Excenel RTU EZ provides rapid action, outstanding efficacy and safety. The product has a four-day pre-slaughter withdrawal period.
“Excenel RTU EZ offers effective treatment and protection against major swine bacterial pneumonia pathogens, but is now easier to administer,” Sornsen says. “This fast-acting formula is a great anti-infective option to use in high-value pigs in the late-finishing stage due to its proven efficacy, safety profile and short pre-slaughter withdrawal time.”
The product is active against organisms that cause most swine respiratory disease issues, including Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella choleraesuis and Streptococcus suis type 2.
The product should be administered intramuscularly and requires no refrigeration or reconstitution. For additional information on Pfizer’s portfolio of swine products, click here.
