Each year the University of Minnesota Veterinary College presents the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, to provide “science-driven solutions” to veterinarians, consultants, producers and others committed to the pork industry. This year’s events will begin on Sept. 17 and run through Sept. 20, at the RiverCentre, in St. Paul, Minn.
Pre-conference sessions begin on Saturday, Sept. 17, with the following topics: University of Alberta Reproduction Session, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; and Porcine Respiratory and Reproductive Syndrome CAP Session, 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 18, features three sessions: Defining the Grow/Finish Productivity Optimum, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; Carlos Pijoan SDEC Symposium on Swine Dysentery, 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Statistics for the “Pig-headed,” 1:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
On Monday, Sept. 19, the conference begins with the keynote lecture, “Why we make mistakes,” by Joseph Hallinan, author and Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist. That is followed by “The outlook for the swine industry and its relationship with the global economy,” presented by Brian Briggeman, economist.
A trade show and multiple breakout sessions addressing swine health, production and management issues complete the day’s agenda.
Tuesday, Sept. 20, features the Pijoan Lecture, with this year’s topic, “Genes, gametes and gestation outcomes: essential links in a successful breeding management program” by George Foxcroft, professor of swine reproductive physiology, University of Alberta, Edmonton. This year’s Hanson Lecture, “What should we do about flu?” will feature Montserrat Torremorell, DVM, Allen D. Leman Chair in Swine Health and Productivity, University of Minnesota.

For the sessions on Sept. 19-20, there is an early-bird registration rate, through Aug. 15, of $315 per person; after that date, the rate is $465. Registration includes a CD of conference proceedings. The registration fee for graduate and veterinary students is $175, regardless of the registration date.
