Preparations for the 21st annual World Pork Expo are in full-swing, featuring a new Wednesday, Thursday and Friday schedule that promises to allow producers to be home for the weekend.
World Pork Expo will take place June 3-5, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines. As always, a full schedule is planned for this year’s event, including the Marketing Information Center, sponsored by Pork Magazine; Pork Academy, sponsored by the National Pork Board; an industry tour; a variety of educational seminars; and farm toy show and sale presented by the National Farm Toy Museum.
Plan to spend some time on the WPX trade show floor; with more than 500 exhibitors it’s a great place to do some comparison shopping. Trade show hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday. Exhibits will be on display in the Varied Industries Building, the Cattle Barn, as well as outside.
Venture out on to the Grand Concourse on Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. for free musical entertainment, featuring Tony Valdez and the Retro Rockets, Confederate Railroad, and Sonny Geraci and the Outsiders.
Both the National Swine Registry Breed Show and Sale and the World Pork Expo Junior National Show will be held during the week’s event. The NSR events will run from Wednesday through Friday, and the Junior National Show is Tuesday through Saturday. All take place in the Swine Barn.
A WPX Industry Tour will be available to interested parties, beginning on Monday, June 1, and running through Wednesday, June 3. It will depart from Airport Holiday Inn, Des Moines. Choose from several different tours, with stops at Iowa State University, Pioneer, IVESCO, Hy-Vee and many more. For pricing and a schedule, visit the Web link.
Of course there will be the perennial barbecue cooking competition—the BarbeQlossal. It will begin on Friday, with prizes awarded on Saturday afternoon.
