As a parent with young children, we have what we call “teachable moments” in our home. These are usually events or actions we’ve seen in the community or on television that provide us an opportunity to visit with our kids about the best way to handle a particular situation.
Our goal is to use these outside incidents as a vehicle for discussing our values and expectations so that our kids can learn from others’ experiences. You’ll have to ask my kids whether the technique is effective or not, but the conversations are much easier than the ones that come when they learn the same lessons the hard way.
