At a meeting in Chicago just over two years ago, an executive of a major U.S. food company looked across the table at a number of pork producer leaders and uttered this blunt truth: “Pork producers don’t know anything about their customers and what their needs are.” Then he added, “But we don’t really understand you and your business, either. We need to close that gap.”

The meeting brought together producers, packers and food industry representatives to discuss animal well-being and what each constituency needed to do to satisfy each other’s concerns. It was from this meeting that the idea for the Pork Quality Assurance Plus program was born.
