Young exhibitors will vie for top honors in the World Pork Expo Junior National swine shows, taking place on Wednesday, June 8, and Thursday, June 9, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

Each year, nearly 20,000 pork producers and industry professionals attend World Pork Expo, which features the world’s largest pork-specific trade show, seminars and numerous other exhibits and fun events.  This year, WPX runs from Wednesday, June 8 through Friday, June 10, at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

As always, the featured highlight is the world-class trade show. There, producers can view the newest products, services and technologies offered by more than 450 commercial exhibitors. Trade show hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday.

Two special events have become a “must” for many WPX attendees. On Thursday, the World Pork Open Clay Target Championship will take place at the New Pioneer Gun Club in Waukee. Registration information is available from Craig Boelling at boellingc@nppc.org.

On Friday, 144 people will golf in the World Pork Open Golf Outing at the Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk, Iowa. You can sign up individually or as a foursome by contacting Bryan Humphreys at humphreysb@nppc.org.

A variety of educational seminars will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, at the fairgrounds’ Varied Industries Building. You can choose from business seminars that focus on new technologies and management techniques, as well as PORK Academy presentations that include carbon footprint, euthanasia options, feed cost strategies, nutrition labeling and more.

Located in the Swine Barn, you will find the WPX Junior National swine show. Exhibitors from across the country will show crossbred barrows on Wednesday and purebred gilts on Thursday. Juniors also can participate in Youth PQA Plus training and judging contests.

On Friday morning, attendees can view open-class swine shows, including purebred and crossbred classes. The breeding stock sales will take place on Saturday, June 11, from 8 a.m. until completion.

Throughout WPX, the National Swine Registry America’s Best Genetics Alley will be on display in the Cattle Barn. It will showcase prominent purebred genetic resources, including seedstock suppliers, boar semen companies and exporting firms.

Those who pre-register at worldpork.org by Saturday, June 4, will receive a $10 discount off the on-site-admission price of $15 (admission is good for all three days). You also can use vouchers when you register online. Registering early means you’ll start receiving free WPX e-mail alerts so that you’ll always have the most current information.
