Organic products are among the leading growth categories in grocery stores today. According to USDA, while the rate of new food-product introductions declined between 1995 and 2000, “all-natural” product introductions increased by 178 percent and new organic products grew by 57 percent. As a whole, the organic industry is growing at a remarkable annual average of 20 percent.
Later this month, USDA’s long-awaited definition of what does and doesn’t qualify as organic begins. With the new, and lengthy, rule there is an accredited program where organic food suppliers are certified. There also is a USDA organic seal.
