While it's not pork, there is an interesting development concerning new products in the meat case. Pilgrim's Pride Corp. has rolled out a brand new product line for kids that features the USDA-regulated word "healthy" on its packages. This is clearly in response to the public's charges that food company tactics are making U.S. kids fat. More importantly, this signals a new trend in product development and promotion.
The products will carry the label EatWellStayHealthy Kids. So far, it consists of a line of baked and breaded chicken products, including chicken-breast nuggets and popcorn chicken. The products will be sold in Publix Super Markets in the Southeastern region of the United States.
The American Heart Association and USDA Child Nutrition Programs both approved the products. The EatWellStayHealthy Kids products contain no trans fats and will be available in more than 3,000 national retail locations by late February.
