Consumers should be the big winners when USDA releases its new National Organic Standards on Oct. 21. Now they will know the exact organic content of all food products.
These new federal standards mandate how food producers and manufacturers can label organic products. The new labeling requirements will ensure that organic products are produced according to the following definitions:
100% Organic - Must contain only organic ingredients.
Organic - Must be at least 95 percent organic by weight.
Made with organic ingredients - A product's contents are at least 70 percent organic.
Use of organic ingredients - Organic ingredients may only be listed in the ingredients statement.
