Time for a farrowing refresher course? Whether you or your employees could benefit from improved farrowing skills, a self-study course has come to your rescue.

Beginning Sept. 20 and running through Dec. 20, the National Pork Producers Council will present a 13-week farrowing management course that you can access through the Internet. The curriculum is designed for anyone working in the farrowing area of any pork production operation.

The farrowing management course is part of the Distance Learning Project, which is an NPPC-directed, checkoff-funded program. There are 10 lessons in all, including a self-graded quiz with each one. The lessons are designed for you to be able to complete at your own pace; each one usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes. Once you complete all 10 sections, you will receive a certificate.

The farrowing course is offered via the Internet to provide a convenient continuing-education option for pork professionals, says Jenny Felt, NPPC special projects manager.

Each registered participant will receive a user name and password that provides access to the curriculum. There is a $25 fee for the class which is limited to 250 students.

For more information on the course, visit www.nppc.org; go to the "Especially for Producers" section and select the "Distance in Learning" option. You may also contact Jenny Felt at (515) 223-2771
