Producers sometimes wonder why it’s important to build neighbor relations. After all, the general thought prevails: “If they stay out of my hair, I’ll stay out of theirs.”

But, that’s not the way things work today. To help you better understand the importance of neighbor relations, Dennis Frame, director of the University of Wisconsin-Discovery Farms Program, raises these three questions:

1.  Does the average person in your community understand your business today?

2.  Does the average citizen support the value of your business?

3.  Do your neighbors have an influence on whether you stay in business?

If the answer to questions 1 and 2 is “no,” and you need to get a permit to expand your operation, you could be in trouble. Your neighbors can have a big influence on the future of your business.
