Bulk-bin management is essential to keeping feed as fresh as possible, say experts at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.

For starters, they suggest trying to run the bin empty between each feed delivery. But of course there’s more to it than that, here’s a quick rundown of tips designed to keep hog feed fresh.

Monthly tasks:

  • Inspect each bin.
  • Check for leaking seams on the bin.
  • Check for porous, rusty areas on the bin surface.
  • Examine inlet and exit mouths of augers.

  Spring and fall tasks:

  • Run bin empty once a month.
  • Dust the bin with a mold inhibitor.

  Every six months:

  • Pressure-wash the bin’s interior.
  • Allow the bin to dry thoroughly before refilling.
  • Fumigate the bin to help ensure that all insects and mites have been eradicated.
  • Closely monitor employee health and safety when fumigating and entering the feed bins. Always take all necessary precautions.
