Storing bagged feed properly keeps feed safe and fresh for your pigs. Here, John Carr, DVM, Iowa State University, offers some suggestions on how to accomplish that task.

You need to store feed bags:

  • In a cool and dry area, at temperatures less than 64°F.
  • On pallets – not directly on the floor.
  • Away from strong smelling products such as oil or disinfectants.
  • Bags should be stock controlled; always use the oldest deliveries first.
  • Storage should be vermin proof. Ensure that all feed containers are covered at all times.
  • Keep track of expiration dates. This is especially true for products, such as creep feed, containing milk. They generally have a 3-month to 9-month storage span.
