A tool from the University of Minnesota allows you to put some numbers to the level of aroma that originates from your pork operation. The program, called the Odor From Feedlots Setback Estimation Tool or OFFSET, can be used for either existing facilities or proposed expansions. It helps determine how far away you need to keep animal facilities or manure storage from neighbors to reduce the potential for creating annoying odor conditions.

Although designed for use in Minnesota, OFFSET has been successfully used in other states. Just be sure to change the weather data to reflect your local conditions.
